Diesel Engine Manufacturer Cummins adopts LED Lighting

LED Area Lights

The Brazilian unit of Cummins, the biggest independent manufacturer of diesel engines in the world, took a step forward to improve the luminosity level and the energetic efficiency of the external illumination of the factory located in the municipality of Guarulhos, in the Greater São Paulo. Aligned with the innovation and high technology that are present in the location since 1974, the company has changed the old metallic vapor lamps for 90 LED luminaires provided and implemented by GE Lighting.

The Solution

Two LED luminaire models were implemented in the factory: Cobrahead Modular, which lights the vehicle walkways, and Area Light, installed in the facility's parking lot. The combination between eco-efficient technology and more safety to employees and clients that get around the location during the night results in a significant cost savings in the maintenance costs and in the electric power consumption.

While Cobrahead Modular, with power of 130 watts, generates savings from 48% to 68% compared to the metallic vapor lamps, Area Light (202 Watts) reduces the consumption in up to 50%.

Results & Benefits

The adoption of LED technology in the external area of Cummins facility us highly providential for the many people and vehicle that transit daily by the facility to transport engines from various types that equip trucks, buses, boats, tractors, harvesters, trains and stationary and maritime applications. Paulo Rogério dos Santos, electrical engineering chief of Cummins Brazil, appreciates the new external lighting before the growing action in the factory.

"The growth of the local operations of Cummins and the location in the whereabouts of Cumbica International Airport generate a great cargo activity in the site and the new lighting is essential for the production pace keeps high also during the night", explains Santos, adding that the company extended the focus in 2000 to also act in the manufacturing, sales and rental of electric generators.

For Alexandre Ferrari, general manager of GE Lighting for Brazil, the new external lighting of Cummins is a reference case that shows an important application of LED in the industrial sector. "Cobrahead Modular and Area Light are beyond the savings generated with the higher energetic efficiency and positively impact in the factory's operational results, helping to keep good productivity and safety levels", he states.
